Our last Original Cartoon Heroes, for the first part of this series, are Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, founders of the world famous Hanna-Barbera Cartoons studio. And maybe my most important heroes.
Most important? For a few reasons.
Two of my favorite cartoons growing up were The Flintstones and The Huckleberry Hound Show (the third was Bugs Bunny). I was part of the first TV generation, and these were some of the first TV created original superstar shows.
But that’s not all. I was the last president of Hanna-Barbera, an honor that I almost can’t even contemplate. My office was originally Bill’s (he’d moved upstairs to a penthouse office) and directly across the hall from Joe’s. Just being in their rarefied air would have changed my life in cartoons, but talking with them all the time was eye opening. And more… Frederator Studio’s head of development, Eric Homan, started there the same year as me and we became buddies and then colleagues for 25 years because of our time there together.
